Sleep 06 - Drink - Upset tummy keeping you awake? A hot cup of ‘gold milk’ may be the answer.

If I'm having a difficult time with my IBS this usually works in some way during the day. It might work as a night time drink to wind down with around 60 to 90 minutes before bed too.

Turmeric is related to ginger and they both appear to have stomach calming properties as well as aiding with digestion. The sprinkle of black pepper on top at the end promotes the anti-inflammation properties of one of the active calming constituents [curcumin] in the turmeric.

Recipe (for one serving)
Ingredients -

1 large cup milk of your choice
(I use oat milk, but works fine with almond milk or cow’s milk too)

▢ 1 teaspoon honey (optional)

▢ 1 teaspoon coconut oil (optional)

▢ ¼ teaspoon ground turmeric

▢ ¼ teaspoon ground ginger

▢ ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon

▢ ¼ teaspoon ground cardamom

▢ sprinkle of freshly ground black pepper

(Personally I don't use coconut oil nor honey and it tastes fine. I've also seen cloves, star anise, aniseed, and/ or nutmeg added to the spice mix too)

1. In a small saucepan, gently heat the milk of your choice with the all the spices [bar the black pepper] over a medium heat. Stir occasionally and bring to the point where it is almost boiling, with small bubbles forming around the edge of the pan.

2. After around 10 minutes of low simmering it's ready to be poured into a mug [sieve if wanted but you don’t need to]. I'll often let the mix continue low simmering for around 20 with no issue, but do keep stirring every few minutes

3. Once poured sprinkle black pepper over the top.
